“Rebbe Maharash Desk” Identified in Colorado Antique Store

A new development has emerged in the ongoing controversy surrounding a Judaica auction, after items matching those described as historically significant alleged items of the Rebbeim, were identified for sale in an antique store in Colorado.

Several objects matching the description, appearance, and style of items currently appearing in the auction were found on open sale in a general antique setting, raising further questions among collectors about the uniqueness and authenticity of the pieces being offered.

This development comes after an article published on Wednesday by Anash.org, which raised concerns over repeated requests for authentication and ownership history details allegedly going unanswered by the auction house operating through the Bidspirit platform.

As previously reported by Anash.org, the wider controversy surrounds a stream of highly questionable artifacts allegedly connected to the Rebbeim and members of Beis Harav that have continued appearing on the Judaica auction market.

Among the items reportedly offered for sale were a supposed writing desk attributed to the Rebbe Maharash for Rebbetzin Rivkah, an ornate serving piece described as having belonged to the Frierdiker Rebbe featuring a cut-glass design and a silver handle, along with a wide range of additional items, including household objects, ceremonial items, personal belongings, clothing, coins, and dollars allegedly distributed by the Rebbe.

A new finding shows that an antique shop in Colorado recently sold an identical writing desk and glass bowl to the ones being sold in the auction.

Archived images and syndication records of the original listings show a 19th-century marquetry walnut kneehole desk, with matching handles, the same crack across the top, and identical grain patterns on the drawers, along with dimensions reportedly matching down to the half inch of the one being sold in the auction and attributed as having been “handcrafted by the Rebbe Maharash for Rebbetzen Rivkah.” A unique handcrafted table would not have an identical match.

Additionally, a European cut-glass serving bowl is shown as sharing the same structure, dimensions, and visual detailing as the item currently being offered in the auction, described as “the Frierdiker Rebbe’s bowl.”

According to previous reporting by Anash.org, nearly all of the items reportedly originated from a single source identified as “S.D.,” who allegedly supported the claims through letters said to have been signed by members of the Frierdiker Rebbe’s family. A prior Anash.org investigation uncovered what it described as “incontrovertible evidence” that at least one authentication document tied to the collection was forged.

Despite the controversy, the items reportedly continued to appear in auctions through the auction house “Kiflayim Letushiya” on the Bidspirit platform, drawing growing calls from collectors and researchers for greater transparency regarding authentication and ownership history.

A lengthy correspondence shared with Anash.org appears to show repeated requests from collectors and researchers for detailed authentication and ownership history information, including chain of custody, expert review, and verification methods, which the auction house largely declined to answer directly.

In multiple responses, the auction house reportedly dismissed the inquiries and at times escalated the exchange with warnings of potential legal action.
