Police officers were spotted in Crown Heights stores on Tuesday, ensuring that shoppers were wearing masks. Officers also stood outside 770 handing out masks to passersby.
The law enforcement visits come following NYC mayor Bill de Blasio‘s announcement this morning that the city will fine people who refuse to wear a face mask.
“We don’t want to fine people. If we have to, we will,” Mayor de Blasio said. “Clearly, our goal, of course, is to give everyone a free face mask and get them to wear it.”
According to New York law, when one is in public and unable to maintain social distancing, a mask must be worn. This includes walking on busy streets, shopping in stores, and davening in shul. When outdoors, and able to maintain a distance of six feet, there is no requirement for a mask.
While officers are indeed visiting Crown Heights’ stores, they may only issue tickets indoors if holding a warrant. Cops are permitted to fine unmasked shoppers as they leave stores though, without the need for a warrant.
