Not Willing to Compromise, Netanya Zal Grows Stronger

After a landmark inaugural year, Tomchei Temimim Netanya is opening registration for its exclusive program for zal bochurim, standing as one of the only yeshivos in Eretz Yisroel to flatly refuse government pressure to introduce secular studies, even at the cost of millions of shekels in state funding.

The program launched last year with close to twenty talmidim housed in a spacious villa overlooking the Mediterranean. What followed, by all accounts, was a year that fully lived up to its promise.

Rosh Yeshiva Rabbi Moshe Orenstein told the talmidim at the outset that it would be the most meaningful year of their lives. Today, every talmid testifies that the promise was fulfilled completely.

The faculty assembled for the program represents some of the finest maggidei shiur available. Rabbi Yisroel Yosef Rifkind, a tremendous talmid chochom, guides the bochurim through the masechta material, while Rabbi Neuhauser, a gaon and gifted mechanech, teaches them how to learn.

Beyond delivering shiurim, Rabbi Neuhauser spends many hours each week sitting individually with every bochur, guiding him in the proper approach to learning.

Chassidus is taught by Rabbi Machfutz, whose name has become synonymous with deep understanding of Chassidus and extraordinary farbrengens. For morning Chassidus, the bochurim learn with Rabbi Aryeh Leib Cohen, a special maggid shiur from the yeshiva ketanah, and during the past year they were tested by him on Hemshech Ranat. Rabbi Orenstein himself also delivers shiurim in Hemshech Ayin Beis.

Every week, a chassidishe farbrengen takes place with one of four renowned mashpi’im: Rabbi Nochum Borovitz, Rabbi Mendel Garlik, Rabbi Saadia Liberov, and Rabbi Machfutz. Each one, in his own distinct style, draws the temimim into an uplifting farbrengen that continues deep into the night. Together, the staff elevates the bochurim in both learning and chassidishe growth, as if they had skipped several grades.

The gashmiyus matches the ruchniyus. The temimim live in a luxurious villa with breathtaking sea views from every corner. The meals are exceptional, and the bochurim have access to a fully equipped kitchen whenever they wish to prepare their own food. The atmosphere is deeply chassidish, warm, and family-oriented – a level of physical and spiritual abundance that the yeshiva says has no parallel elsewhere.

The program’s expansion comes at a moment of significant pressure on yeshivos across Eretz Yisroel. In recent months, various factions within the Israeli government have been pushing mesivtas and zals to introduce secular studies into their curriculum, threatening to withhold millions of shekels in state funding from those that refuse.

As reported on Anash.org, the financial pressure has led some Chabad institutions to explore ways of complying by presenting secular subjects in Torah-related formats, such as math through the laws of Kiddush Hachodesh or Hebrew grammar through Torah sources. Many parents remain deeply troubled by even these accommodations, fearing that once the government gains a foothold, future demands will become increasingly difficult to resist.

Tomchei Temimim Netanya has taken an unambiguous stance. The yeshiva operates entirely al taharas hakodesh, and Rabbi Orenstein has been an outspoken voice on the issue.

“Tomchei Temimim was established with mesirus nefesh,” he said at a farbrengen held several months ago. “Yes, this is a major challenge, and I’m sure some will permit it, but Temimim come from mesirus nefesh. If we don’t take a stand now, it will only go from bad to worse.”

Rabbi Orenstein pointed to the founding vision of the Rebbe Rashab, whose first priority was not harchava b’gashmiyus or producing great geonim, but talmidim who are ba’alei mesirus nefesh. He is equally firm that financial survival without government support is possible.

“We are living proof that it’s possible,” he said. “Yes, it’s difficult, but if you follow in the footsteps of the founders of the yeshiva, if you follow the way of the Rebbe, the Rebbe walks with you. And when you go with mesirus nefesh, the brachos of the Rebbeim are immeasurable.”

This year, due to space limitations, the yeshiva is opening its doors to an extremely limited number of bochurim. A new house near the current zal of the Yeshiva Ketanah has been secured for the program, which is scheduled to open on Tuesday, 2 Elul. Only serious talmidim seeking a unique year of growth and elevation will be accepted.
