Lubavitcher artist and singer Shmulik Sofer has released his debut music video, featuring a heartfelt rendition of an ancient niggun passed down from his great-grandfather, R’ Zalman Levin AH.

The niggun, Kol Atzmosai, originates from Nevel, Russia, and was traditionally sung in his family during times of hardship. Sofer chose to release the video in honor of his great-grandfather’s yahrzeit on 3 Shevat.

The niggun holds deep historical significance. R’ Zalman learned it from his grandmother, Rebbetzin Chana Elke AH, who had sung it to comfort the family as the KGB hunted down his father for the “crime” of teaching Torah. The song expressed their hopes for a better future as they endured oppression.

Filmed in Kfar Chabad, the video beautifully captures the emotional depth of the niggun by blending music and visual art. It follows Sofer as he encounters a chassid draped in a tallis, immersed in the soulful Kol Atzmosai melody. Moved by the moment, Sofer begins painting the scene.

As Sofer paints, he becomes more and more connected to the scene unfolding before him. In the final scene, Sofer steps back from his canvas and realizes that the chassid he was painting was not a real person but a fleeting vision – an inspiration from a deeper, spiritual place.
