The US Consumer Product Safety Commission is reportedly considering taking action that would ban the use of gas stove nationwide over the pollutants released by the appliances.

Bloomberg reports that The Consumer Product Safety Commission is weighing the nationwide ban after studies showed that gas stoves can cause health and respiratory problems, with CPSC Commissioner Richard Trumka Jr. telling the outlet that “any option is on the table. Product that can’t be made safe can be banned.”

The American Chemical Society and NYU Law School’s Institute for Policy Integrity released reports which state that gas stoves release pollutants like nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide, and fine particles at levels that have been deemed unsafe by the EPA and World Health Organization.

The reports also link gas stoves to respiratory illnesses, cardiovascular problems, cancer, and other health conditions, with 12% of childhood asthma cases linked to the appliances.

About 40% of US homes currently use gas stoves.

Trumka said his agency will open public comment on the matter later this year. Such a ban would only apply to new products, he said.
