Chassidic Jew Appointed Assistant US Treasury Secretary

The Senate has confirmed Moshe (Mitchell) Silk as Assistant Secretary of Treasury yesterday, making him the highest-ranking Chassidic Jew in any US Administration.

The Senate has confirmed Moshe (Mitchell) Silk as Assistant Secretary of Treasury yesterday, making him the highest-ranking Chassidic Jew in any US Administration.

Silk, is a Nadvorna chossid and resident of Borough Park, has been the Acting Assistant Secretary since July 2019. He joined the administration in October 2017, becoming the Deputy Assistant Secretary for International Affairs at the U.S. Department of the Treasury.

Before joining the Treasury Department, Silk spent decades as a lawyer specializing in energy, infrastructure, and China. He speaks fluent Mandarin and Cantonese.

Silk has lived in Hong Kong for 13 years and traveled extensively in East Asia. He has seen the work of the Shluchim to Asia up close and has become a strong supporter of Chabad Shluchim.

Since his appointment to the Treasury, Mr. Silk has spent most of his week in Washington, commuting back when possible to spend Shabbos in Boro Park.
