With the exciting news of the opening of a new full-size beis medrash opening adjacent to 770, speculation has run wild as to how the building will be structured and used. The proposed expansion would more than double the size of the back of 770, creating space for hundreds of additional people.
Digital renderings have begun circulating online showing what an expanded 770, connected to the new beis medrash on Union Street, could look like. No verification has been made as of yet.
As reported earlier by Anash.org, construction behind 770 for the new beis medrash is moving ahead at a rapid pace, with crews working around the clock, including until the final minutes before Shabbos. Workers were seen removing large amounts of sand on Thursday night, and the ground level of the new building was lowered to match the floor of the big zal, leaving the two spaces level with each other.
The decision to level the floors was reportedly a last-minute development.
The new building runs parallel to the back section of the big zal but extends farther back. It begins near the Tashlich area and stretches to the area opposite the 770-Live setup.
According to sources involved in the project, an opening will be made between the two spaces near the bookshelf of Gemaros, close to the back exit of 770 leading to the courtyard. There are also reports of eventual plans to remove the separating wall entirely, directly connecting the two spaces.
However, others involved in the project say no such plans are currently in place.
The new space is expected to be open throughout the week for learning. It is not yet clear whether it will be open on Shabbos and whether it will also be used for other events.
Parts of the structure were built using lightweight construction methods, and some sections already have exterior cladding and installed windows. The ceiling reaches the same height as that of 770’s big zal, giving the space a sense of openness.
There are also unconfirmed rumors that further construction may be considered, possibly including additional floors. However, nothing further has been confirmed at this time.
