Over fifty nine thousand square miles comprise rural Georgia, and Chabad of Rural Georgia is on a mission to bring Yiddishkeit to every single yid there, no matter how far out he lives.

This year, they focused on three cities to host a public menorah lighting, as well as individual home visitations provided by three student rabbis – Mendel Rivkin, Mendel Baron, and Mendel Piekarski throughout the rest of the state.

Among the unique celebrations was the one in Uptown Columbus. For the first time ever, a menorah was staged and lit in Uptown Columbus, Georgia, a town that has seen Judaism since the late 19th century, boasted an orthodox shul until quite recently, and once had 3000 Jewish residents, including some in strategic political positions.

At all of the three menorah lightings, over 200 individuals enjoyed donuts and Chasidic music, providing for a unique experience for all. Most of them celebrated Chanukah publicly, as the Rebbe desires for every Jew, for the first time in their lives.

The student rabbis visited over 50 homes and met with more than 100 Jews throughout their trip. They drove a record breaking 2180 miles over the span of 10 days. Tefillin, mezuzos, sifrei kodesh, menorahs, and kosher food all make up the mitzvos performed during this arduous week on the road.

“Never before has this much “ner mitzvah veTorah ohr: been spread over the rural roads of Georgia,” Rabbi Markowitz said.
