‘What’s Your Plan?’ Bochurim Have an Answer at Downing St Rally
While the rally demanded action from the government, the mechina bochurim turned to the Yidden at the rally with a practical demand of their own: put on tefillin, take Shabbos candles, and add a mitzvah.
As hundreds gathered outside Downing Street on Thursday evening, demanding action after the Golders Green terror attack, bochurim from the Lubavitch Mechina in Golders Green arrived with tefillin and Shabbos candles, calling on Yidden at the rally to add their own response with another mitzvah.
The rally, organized by Campaign Against Antisemitism, was held a day after two Jewish men were stabbed in Golders Green, in an attack that police declared a terrorist incident. As Anash.org reported, the attack took place at around 11:20 AM on Golders Green Road and nearby Highfield Avenue, outside a shul and along one of London’s busiest Jewish streets. Shomrim volunteers helped detain the knife-wielding suspect until police arrived, while Hatzola and emergency responders treated the victims at the scene.
Outside Downing Street, protesters held signs asking, “Prime Minister, what is your plan?” and called on Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer to present a clear plan to fight antisemitism. CAA described the situation as a national emergency, saying that words were no longer enough and that the Jewish community needed action.
The crowd was addressed by Stephen Silverman of Campaign Against Antisemitism, Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg, Lord Toby Young, and Josh Howie. Silverman said that “vandalism, arson, firebombing, harassment, violent assault have all become commonplace in the daily lives of the Jewish community,” while Rees-Mogg told the crowd, “You are our people, we are your people, we are one people.”
While the rally demanded action from the government, the mechina bochurim turned to the Yidden at the rally with a practical demand of their own: put on tefillin, take Shabbos candles, and add a mitzvah.
The bochurim set up a small Mivtzoim table near the rally and helped Jewish men put on tefillin just steps from Downing Street. Others stopped by to take Shabbos candles.
The rally’s message to the Prime Minister was, “What is your plan?” The bochurim’s message to the Yidden there was simple: every Yid has something to do.
