New Wooden Doors Fitted at 770 After Yud Shvat Attack
Nearly three months after Dan Sohail rammed his vehicle into the rear entrance of 770 Eastern Parkway on Yud Shvat, new custom wooden doors were seen being fitted at the site on Monday, replacing the temporary metal doors that had stood in their place since the attack.
New permanent custom wooden doors were seen being fitted on Monday at the rear side entrance of 770 Eastern Parkway, replacing the temporary metal doors put in after Dan Sohail drove his vehicle into the entrance five times on Yud Shvat.
The original doors, donated by Reb Yerachmiel Jacobson just five months before the attack, were significantly damaged in the ramming. Upon arriving at the back entrance that night, Sohail exited his vehicle, moved the barriers protecting the building, gestured for people to move away, then returned to his car and rammed the entrance, reversing and accelerating into it four additional times.
Miraculously, no one was injured, despite the ramp outside having been packed with bochurim just minutes earlier as they exited the “Hour with the Rebbe” event. Thousands of anash, bochurim, shluchim, and guests from around the world had gathered at 770 that day to mark Yud Shevat.
After police feared a possible explosive device in the vehicle, 770 and the surrounding area were evacuated. The official farbrengen was rescheduled for Thursday night, as thousands regrouped at Oholei Torah, the Kollel on Union, and other locations, where farbrengens continued through the night. At 5:45 AM, police gave the all-clear, and bochurim re-entered 770 singing and dancing.
Sohail was arrested at the scene and charged with multiple hate crimes by state prosecutors. On March 2, he was taken into federal custody on a federal complaint alleging intentional damage to religious property.
In the weeks that followed, the service lane running alongside 770 was closed to traffic, with police maintaining a near-constant presence at both ends of the block. Temporary metal doors were put in place at the damaged entrance in the interim.
On Monday, those temporary doors were removed, and a new set of permanent wooden doors was seen being measured, fitted, and drilled into place. The new doors are expected to serve as the entrance for many years to come.
