As the month of Elul approaches, there is a familiar feeling in the air — the “Elul winds” are beginning to blow.

In Chassidus, the “Elul winds” describe the spiritual awakening that begins to be felt as Elul approaches — a stirring toward teshuvah, reflection, and preparation for the new year. There’s a sense that the atmosphere is changing, calling us to prepare for Rosh Hashanah.

The Rebbe would often cite the Mateh Ephraim regarding the practice during Elul to have one’s tefillin and mezuzos checked, as part of this preparation for the new year.

Tefillin and mezuzos contain countless details that matter, and a proper examination requires care, patience and expertise. Sometimes an issue may have been overlooked from the beginning; other times, changes can develop with age and use. Ink and parchment can be affected by time, temperature or humidity, while the batim and retzuos of tefillin can also experience wear or changes that may not be noticeable from the outside.
