Organizers of the International Chidon Sefer Hamitzvos have announced that this year’s Chidon Shabbaton will be canceled due to the spreading coronavirus.

Over one-thousand children were scheduled to take part in the Chidon Shabbaton, joining peers from around the world in a final competition in their knowledge of Sefer Hamitzvos.

A letter signed by Rabbi Moshe Kotlarsky, Rabbi Yerachmiel Benjaminson, Rabbi Sholom Ber Baumgerten and Rabbi Shimmy Weinbraum says they unable to hold the Shabbaton as planned but are looking for other ways to give the finalists the recognition they deserve.

“We are shipping the children Chidon sweaters and ID cards, and will arrange transport for all appropriate awards,” the letter said. “Further details will be forthcoming about our plans for a Gameshow and how and when we can properly celebrate the children’s accomplishment”.

The US now has 1,336 cases of the coronavirus, including 36 fatalities, and New York state has 216 confirmed coronavirus cases, the second-highest number of any state.
