At times I experience great inspiration and yearning in my Avodas Hashem, and yet at other times I feel spiritually insensitive and devoid…which of these depicts the true “me?”
A certain Yid is known to be a true Baal Chessed, as he selflessly busies himself with helping others. However, if anyone dares to insult him, this Yid becomes enlivened and defensive. Suddenly, he seems to have quite an ego! How do we reconcile this? How is it possible for the same individual to be both selfless and yet very egotistic?
The Gemara states that a non-Jew will perform an act of kindness only with the intent of benefitting himself (“ligarmayhu”). Would this apply even to such instances the righteous Gentiles who saved and hid Yidden during WWII? Are we to assume that these people were also acting with selfish motives?
I have learned much about the importance and significance of conquering my ta’avos. Yet I still haven’t succeeded in removing the excitement which I feel for physical enjoyment. Why is this? To what do I attribute the difference between what I know and what I actually feel?
If I am studying Chassidus frequently, why am I not experiencing a palpable love and fear of Hashem?
Many of us encounter one or more of these existential questions often in our day to day lives.
Yet what so many people may not know, is that the Tanya contains the answers to all of these, and many other, deeply profound questions.
