A group of sofrim from New York, headed by Rabbi Faitel Lewin, traveled to Houston, Texas, where they checked the tefillin and mezuzuos belonging to locals. Houston Gan Yisroel Campers got a chance to see the sofrim at work.
Rabbi Lewin has been traveling to Houston annually for the past 18 years, to give the local community a chance to have their tefillin and mezuzos checked without having to send them to a sofer by mail.
During the visit, the campers from the Houston Gan Yisroel were given a chance to see the sofrim at work, and see for themselves the work and detail that goes into each mezuza.
“After Tu B’Av, the custom is to increase in Torah study and introspection for the upcoming month of Elul. It is an appropriate time to have one’s tefillin and mezuzahs checked by an accredited scribe to ensure that they are in good condition and fit for use,” the shluchim explained to the community.
