A rare discovery, unveiled for the first time at the Moreshet auction house, is sending shockwaves through researchers of the Rebbe’s history: a collection of original documents that vanished from sight for a hundred years (!) and are now seeing the light of day. The correspondence from 1925–1926 proves that about twenty years before building his Chassidic empire in New York, the Lubavitcher Rebbe – alongside his brother Reb Leib -was officially approved for Aliyah to Eretz Yisrael by the British Mandate authorities.
A single lead led to the dramatic discovery: a single document introduced about six months ago in Auction 88 of the Moreshet Auction House (lot 122). The ensuing investigation led to the location of the complete file – three sets totaling 10 leaves that rewrite history and present the unfolding of the Aliyah process from start to finish.
Fascinating identifying details from the documents:
- The Address: The address of the Rebbe and his brother, Yisrael Aryeh Leib, is listed as UPORNAJA STR. 15, EKATERINOSLAW, the house of the Mekubal Rabbi Levi Yitzchak.
- The game of political identities: to comply with the stringent Mandate regulations, the Rebbe’s profession was listed as “farmer” and his relative, Rabbi Yisrael Asher Liba (an important Chabad Chassid of Jerusalem), was listed as his uncle.
- Year of birth: the document notes the year 1895 (rather than 1902), based on the mistaken official records that were meant to prevent enlistment into the Russian army.
The Historical Riddle Takes a Turn
Throughout the years of his leadership, the Rebbe was asked more than once why he did not immigrate to Eretz Yisrael. His answers varied, ranging from the obligation to remain as the ‘last captain on the ship’ guarding Diaspora Jewry, to his commitment not to distance himself from the gravesite of his father-in-law, the Rebbe the Rayatz, and even to the assertion that if this were the correct path – the founders of Chassidut would have sacrificed their lives for it.
Now it turns out that in his twenties, even before he married Rebbetzin Chaya Mushka, this step was not merely a theoretical idea – but a bureaucratic process that was successfully completed and yielded an official Aliyah permit (immigration visa).
The rare collection, preserved in very good condition, will be offered in the upcoming public auction at Moreshet and is already generating immense excitement among collectors, researchers, and Chassidim around the world.
Additional Rare Treasures in Moreshet’s Upcoming Auction
Alongside the historical file, Moreshet Auctions introduces in its upcoming auction an unprecedented collection of items, covering varied stations in Chabad history; the foremost among these are the following:
- A royal utensil from the house of the Admor the Rayatz: a personal fork of a set that was frequently on the table of the sixth Admor of Chabad, the Rebbe the Rayatz. The fork was given by his wife, Rebbetzin Nechamah Dinah, to Rabbi Avraham Paris.
- Early Kuntres and general letter by the Rebbe with additions handwritten by him (Tishrei 13, 1950): a rare item – Kuntres for Sukkot that was sent by the Rebbe before he officially accepted the Nessi’ut (in the year following the passing of the Rebbe the Rayatz). The letter that was sent to the Gaon Rabbi Yeshaya Halevi Horowitz contains additions handwritten by the Rebbe (“ש”ב הרה”ג…”).
- Nachalat Olamin – a special Siddur given by the Rebbe (the eve of Shavu’ot 1979): Pocket format Siddur Tehillat Hashem, with a general-personal letter that was mounted on the inside flyleaf. The Siddur was handed out by the Rebbe himself to Jewish children before Bar/Bat Mitzvah during the Hitva’adut for Shavu’ot 1979. The Rebbe blessed the owners of the Siddur with extraordinary blessings: “והשם יתברך יעזור שכולם יגדלו לתורה חופה ומעשים טובים מתוך הרחבה… הסידור מתנת ה’ הוענק לילד/ה כ”נחלת עולמים” כדי שיבקשו בהם כל הדברים הטובים, וכפי שרשם כ”ק מו”ח אדמו”ר בסידורים שהעניק במתנה שיתקבלו כל תפילותינו – אמן כן יהי רצון”.
- Siddur Baal HaTanya – Berditchev, 1818. Second and rarest edition of Siddur Admor Hazaken with Divrei Elokim Chaim, Ari version.
- Religious discovery: the lost elucidation on the Tanya: a comprehensive manuscript that was never published, with an elucidation by the Gaon Rabbi Yeshaya Halevi Horowitz (the grandson of the Shelah Hakadosh and an important Chabad Rabbi) on Sefer HaTanya.
- Collection of coins and bills by the Rebbe: a rare variety of coins that were given directly by the Rebbe (including Dmei Chanukkah, half a dollar, Lag BaOmer 1990 coin) alongside historical bills including a $100 bill from Shenat Habinyan and a $20 bill for printing the Tanya.
- Igrot Kodesh and blessings for the New Year: collection of letters will many blessings by the Rebbe and the Rebbe the Rayatz, including a rare letter handwritten and signed by the Admor Rabbi Shalom Dober Schneerson of Rechitsa (the son of the Maharil of Kopust) with a blessing for the New Year which is auctioned for the first time ever.
One does not enter the New Year without being blessed by the Rebbe or bringing a Segulah item given directly by him into their home for blessing, success, and a good and sweet New Year!
