Rabbi Moshe Herson, Head Shliach of New Jersey and dean of the Rabbinical College of America, passed away on Thursday, 23rd of Teves.

He was 90.

Rabbi Moshe Herson was born on Chof Tammuz 5694 (1934) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, into a frum family and with the in 1949, at the age of 15, influenced by Rabbi Yosef Wineberg, he traveled to Brooklyn to learn in Yeshivas Tomchei Temimim at 770, where he received semichah. During his years in yeshiva, he assisted the Rebbe’s mazkirus in translating letters written in Spanish and Portuguese.

In 5717 (1957), Rabbi Herson was sent by the Rebbe on shlichus to South America, where he worked in Venezuela and Cuba together with Rabbi Binyomin Klein. Before leaving, they had a special yechidus with the Rebbe.

After his chasunah, in 5725 (1965), the Rebbe appointed Rabbi Herson as his shliach to the state of New Jersey. Upon his arrival, Rabbi Herson began building Chabad mosdos throughout the state. He established a yeshiva and a semichah program that over the years grew to produce hundreds of talmidim annually. The semichah certificates issued by the yeshiva are recognized across the world.

Over the decades, Rabbi Herson built a vast network of Torah and chesed institutions, including 50 shuls, schools, and dozens of Chabad Houses on university campuses and in cities across New Jersey.

In 5745 (1985), the Rebbe appointed Rabbi Herson as a member of Agudas Chassidei Chabad, where he played a role in strengthening the Crown Heights neighborhood and was involved in the legal battle to recover the stolen seforim from the Lubavitch library.

In 5746 (1986), Rabbi Herson worked together with other Chabad leaders to establish the “Fund for the Development of Machne Yisroel”, which organized private yechidusen for major donors to Chabad mosdos. These yechidusen became known as “Yechidus for Donors.”

In 5755 (1995), after the discovery of the Rebbe’s Reshimos, Rabbi Herson participated in the historic meeting that led to the decision to begin publishing these writings for the broader public.

Rabbi Herson was one of the Rebbe’s early shluchim. In 5720 (1960), the Rebbe sent him to Newark, New Jersey, to serve as a mashpia in a newly-established yeshiva alongside Rabbi Yisroel Friedman. This yeshiva, directed by Rabbi Chadakov under the Rebbe’s guidance, became a center for Chabad activities across the state. Later, the yeshiva relocated to Morristown, where it flourished as Tomchei Temimim Morristown.

Under Rabbi Herson’s leadership, Chabad of New Jersey expanded dramatically, with over 60 Chabad Houses now serving communities and universities statewide. These mosdos provide Torah education, outreach, and yiddishkeit to Jews of all ages and backgrounds.

His wife, Pearl, predeceased him last month on the 25th of Kislev.

He is survived by his children who are all shluchim in New Jersey: Rabbi Asher Herson (Rockaway, NJ), Rabbi Mendy Herson (Basking Ridge, NJ) and Mrs. Sara Brafman (Morristown, NJ).

His Levaya will take place today, passing by 770 at 12:30 PM followed by kevurah at 1:30 PM at Montefiore Cemetery.
