Following the write-up about the Rebbe in the news, a reader shared with us an unseen picture of the Rebbe accompanying the Frierdiker Rebbe on his journey from Vienna to Warsaw.
The caption on the photo states in Polish: “Yesterday, Rabbi Schneerson arrived in Warsaw permanently from Vienna. He is very popular among the Jewish population, so his co-religionists are also asked to come to the station to greet the Rebbe.”
According to the Frierdiker Rebbe’s travels, it would seem that the photo was taken in Nissan of 5695 (1935).
In the winter of 5695, the Frierdiker Rebbe traveled to Vienna to consult with doctors regarding his weakened speech and general health. In mid-Kislev, he continued on to the ‘West End’ sanatorium in Purkersdorf, near Vienna. The Rebbe accompanied his father-in-law on this journey. During this time, he heard many deep matters in Chassidus directly from the Frierdiker Rebbe, and recorded them in his handwritten notes.
The trip lasted approximately four and a half months. At its conclusion, in the beginning of Nissan, the Frierdiker Rebbe returned to Vienna, where he held several meetings and also received individuals for yechidus. On the 12th of Nissan, he returned home to Warsaw.
The picture of the Frierdiker Rebbe’s arrival in Warsaw, accompanied by the Rebbe, seems to be from this return journey.
Further research brings up the daily “Express Poranny,” the “Morning Express,” a Polish newspaper published in Warsaw between 1922 and 1939. The paper was known as a modern daily newspaper with quick, short political information. The date on the paper is April 16, 1935, which corresponds to 13 Nissan 5695, the morning after the Frierdiker Rebbe’s return that spring.
The newspaper also had local mutations for other cities. Included here is the “Express Kaliski,” the “Kalish Express,” which ran in Kalisz, Poland, between 1925 and 1936. This paper is dated the following day, April 17, 1935.
