Mrs. Lana Jakubowicz, a Holocaust survivor and a matriarch of the Anash community in Antwerp, Belgium, passed away on Wednesday, 11 Sivan.
Mrs. Lana Jakubowicz, a Holocaust survivor and a matriarch of the Anash community in Antwerp, Belgium, passed away on Wednesday, 11 Sivan.
She was 97.
She was born in Grosswardein, Hungary, to Rabbi Yona Elimelech and Mrs. Mirel Weinberger. During the Holocaust, her family was deported to Auschwitz, where her parents and several siblings were murdered. She miraculously survived the horrors of the camps, maintaining her devotion to keeping Shabbos with great mesiras nefesh even while enduring forced labor, and later survived the death marches.
After the war, she eventually made her way to Eretz Yisroel. In 1954, she married her husband, Rabbi Nochum Avraham Jakubowicz, and they established their home in Antwerp. Over the decades, she became known throughout the community for her lifelong dedication to quiet acts of chesed, tzedaka, and helping those in need.
She was predeceased by her husband, Rabbi Nochum Jakubowcz, in Cheshvan 5782.
She is survived by her children: Rabbi Yona Elimelech Jakubowicz – Kiryat Gat; Mrs. Bracha Mirel Zilberstrom – Yerushalayim; and Rabbi Shimon Yaakov Jakubowicz – Boro Park, NY; as well as many grandchildren and great-grandchildren serving as shluchim around the world.
The levaya was held today, Wednesday, in Yerushalayim, with kevura on Har Hazeisim.
