More Than a Business: The Shlichus Behind Machon STaM

From a conversation with Harav Heller to a worldwide STaM operation — how a commitment to Kashrus, quality, and reliability became the foundation of Machon STaM.

The story behind Machon STaM and its commitment to Kashrus, quality, and service.

Nearly twenty years ago, Rabbi Yitzchok Raskin was exploring opportunities for Shlichus when a conversation with Harav Heller helped point him in an unexpected direction.

Having already been involved in Safrus as a Bochur, Rabbi Raskin was familiar with the world of Sifrei Torah, Tefillin, and Mezuzos. Harav Heller encouraged him to take that involvement further and suggested that helping strengthen standards in Safrus could become his Shlichus.

“At the time, I didn’t fully understand what he meant,” Rabbi Raskin recalls. “But as I became more involved, I began to appreciate the tremendous responsibility that comes with this work.”

Through Hashgacha Pratis, that encouragement eventually led to the establishment of Machon STaM, based in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, and serving Shluchim and Jewish communities worldwide.

Taking Responsibility for Kashrus

When someone purchases a Sefer Torah, Tefillin, or Mezuzah, they’re placing tremendous trust in the people responsible for its Kashrus.

At Machon STaM, that responsibility is at the heart of everything we do.

We are extremely selective about the Sofrim we work with, choosing experienced, certified individuals known for their Yiras Shamayim, integrity, and dedication to Halacha.

But even the most skilled Sofer can make an unintentional mistake. That’s why we believe that the Hagah process is just as important as the writing itself.

We maintain very strict oversight of our quality control and are equally selective about the Magi’im entrusted with checking our STaM. Our Magi’im undergo extensive in-house training, sometimes lasting years, before we are confident in their expertise and ready to entrust them with this responsibility.

We do not outsource our Hagah or rely solely on checks performed by the Sofer or anyone else. Every Sefer Torah, pair of Tefillin, and Mezuzah sold through Machon STaM must undergo a fresh manual Hagah by our own trusted Magi’im, along with computerized checking performed by our specially trained team.

Even when an item has already been checked elsewhere, we independently check it again. Maintaining direct oversight of this process is a fundamental part of our commitment to Kashrus.

For over two years, Rabbi Menachem Kahn, a member of the Badatz of Crown Heights, has delivered a dedicated weekly Shiur to our Magi’im, reviewing the intricate Halachos of STaM and discussing practical Shailos that arise during checking.

We believe that maintaining high standards requires constant learning, careful attention, and a willingness to keep improving.

Going the Extra Mile With Sifrei Torah

Sifrei Torah are a particular focus of Machon STaM, with a wide selection of Sifrei Torah in various sizes and Ksovim, including a specialty in Ksav Alter Rebbe.

Every Sefer Torah undergoes a comprehensive, multi-stage checking process. It begins in Eretz Yisroel, where our own Machon STaM team performs a thorough manual Hagah and two computerized checks.

When the Sefer Torah arrives in New York, it is checked all over again by our highly trained local Magi’im, who perform another meticulous manual Hagah, followed by a final computerized check conducted by our own New York team.

Altogether, every Sefer Torah undergoes at least two complete manual checks and three computerized checks, all performed by our own teams in Israel and New York.

No checking process can guarantee perfection, but we believe these additional layers of independent inspection are an essential part of doing everything possible to ensure Kashrus.

Beyond the checking process, we take pride in offering Shluchim and their communities personal guidance, a broad selection, and attentive service throughout the purchase of a Sefer Torah.

Tefillin and Mezuzos — Kashrus Beyond the Parshiyos

The same commitment to Kashrus extends to our Tefillin and Mezuzos, with every item undergoing manual and computerized checking by our own trained team.

With Tefillin, we place particular emphasis on something that is sometimes overlooked: the Kashrus of the Batim themselves.

Not all Batim are manufactured to the same standards. Many lower-quality Batim may contain hidden cracks, cuts, holes, or other imperfections that are difficult to detect beneath the black finish. These issues can affect the Kashrus of the Tefillin, and the person wearing them may never realize there’s a problem.

This isn’t merely a theoretical concern. Over the years, we’ve encountered numerous cases of Batim with serious issues that would not have been obvious to the customer.

The quality of Batim isn’t simply a matter of Hiddur. It can be a matter of basic Kashrus.

That’s why we’re particularly selective about the Batim we use, working with reliable manufacturers, emphasizing proper construction, and conducting careful inspections and spot checks.

But beyond Kashrus and quality, we also believe that receiving Tefillin should be a beautiful and memorable experience.

Just as a precious diamond is presented in an elegant box, something as meaningful as a pair of Tefillin deserves a presentation that reflects its significance.

That’s the inspiration behind Machon STaM’s distinctive Tefillin presentation boxes, which have generated tremendous enthusiasm among Shluchim, Bar Mitzvah families, and recipients alike.

The response has been remarkable, with wonderful feedback coming from communities around the world.

Our goal is for someone receiving Tefillin to feel, from the very first moment, just how precious the Mitzvah truly is.

The Tefillin Bank — Helping More Jews Fulfill the Mitzvah

Through our Tefillin Bank, generous donors and dedicated Shluchim have helped provide thousands of pairs of Tefillin to Jews who otherwise might struggle to afford them, with subsidies of 50% or, in qualifying circumstances, full sponsorship.

A Shlichus That Continues

We are grateful for the trust that so many Rabbonim, Mashpi’im, Shluchim, and families have placed in Machon STaM.

What began with a conversation about Safrus as a Shlichus continues to guide our work today: to keep learning, keep improving, and approach every Sefer Torah, pair of Tefillin, and Mezuzah with the care and responsibility these precious Mitzvos deserve.
