The world’s first-ever potato chip menorah was lit in Clearwater, Florida, by shliach Rabbi Levi Hodakov, followed by a ‘gelt drop’ and a day of fun, games and arcades in the nearby park.

Rabbi Hodakov is known for his creative ideas each year as Chanukah arrives and for creating a new and innovative menorah each year. Last year, he created the world’s largest cereal menorah, and this year, he decided to build the menorah with potato chips.

He had an explanation handy as well. “The word chip stands for ‘Celebrate Hanukkah In Pinellas,'” he exclaimed. He also says that chips, fried in oil, fit right in to the custom of eating foods fried in oil over Chanukah.

Following the lighting, attended by the local fire department hoisted Rabbi Hodakov up in their fire ladder, and Rabbi Hodakov threw out 150 packs of chocolate Chanukah gelt for the children.

The families then enjoyed kosher hot dogs, latkes and donuts, as well as a fun day in the nearby park with laser tag, arcades, go carts, and other activities.
