International Shochet Leads Shechita Presentation at Aliya

In a first for Crown Heights, Aliya hosted a unique live shechita demonstration, giving participants the opportunity to learn about the halachos and then witness the shechita firsthand.

Leading the demonstration was Rabbi Eliyahu Ezagui, a trained shochet who now lives in Eretz Yisroel.

Rabbi Ezagui taught the participants about the many halachos involved in shechita, explaining the requirements of the knife, the various stages of the process, and the careful attention required from the shochet.

He also brought along the specialized knives used for shechita and demonstrated their preparation and use.

Following the presentation, the crowd headed up to the rooftop, where Rabbi Ezagui performed shechita in front of the assembled participants.

The demonstration included a ram, turkey, and chickens, allowing those in attendance to see the process with several different types of animals.

The experience then continued with the preparation of the meat. The boys and other participants had the opportunity to take part in various stages of the process, including cleansing and preparing the animals, salting the meat, and learning about the different steps involved before the meat can be eaten.

Before long, the freshly prepared chicken and turkey were on the barbecue, and the participants sat down together to enjoy the meat they had just watched being prepared, turning the educational demonstration into a memorable and enjoyable evening.

Rabbi Ezagui is already well known to the Aliya community. He previously assisted with Aliya’s weekly tefillin booth on Kingston Avenue on Fridays, where he had the opportunity to meet and connect with many members of the community.
