Instead of Winding Down, Postville Bochurim Wind Up

In the yeshiva world, the final weeks of the summer zman are often about coasting to the finish line. This year, however, the hanhola of Yeshivas Bais Sholom – Mesivta of Postville decided to take a different approach.
Under the guidance of Menahel Rabbi K. Zirkind, the yeshiva introduced a new philosophy for the end of the year: “Winding UP, Not Down.” The goal was to use the final six weeks not as a finish line, but as a springboard, helping bochurim maintain their enthusiasm and momentum through the very end of the zman.
To bring this vision to life, the yeshiva launched the “Springboard Mivtza” on Pesach Sheni. The six-week campaign transformed the atmosphere in the zal. To qualify for the grand end-of-year trip, bochurim had to earn points across every area of yeshiva life.
The requirements went far beyond written tests. Bochurim accumulated points through rigorous chazara, passing oral farhers on blatt after blatt of Gemara, and learning Tanya and maamarim by heart. The mivtza also placed a strong emphasis on consistency during sedarim and maintaining a high standard of personal hanhaga in the dormitory.
Alongside the intense learning, the campaign highlighted the importance of Ahavas Yisroel. Through special “Rebbe’s Tickets,” bochurim were recognized for acts of kindness, whether cleaning the zal without being asked, helping the kitchen staff, or patiently reviewing a Rashi with a classmate. The message was clear: at Bais Sholom, being a mentch is an essential part of being a lamdan.
“The energy these past six weeks was unbelievable,” shared a member of the hanhola. “Instead of getting tired as the year wrapped up, the kol Torah only got louder. The achdus we saw, with bochurim sacrificing their own break times to help classmates pass tests so their entire shiur could unlock the trip, was truly special.”
The bochurim rose to the challenge, collectively investing hundreds of hours into intensive chazara as they worked toward the grand prize: a multi-tiered, action-packed overnight excursion.
For those who met the demanding point quotas, the yeshiva delivered an unforgettable experience. The base-level reward featured a camping getaway packed with activities, including tubing, boating, and jet skiing on the lake.
The classes that pushed themselves even further and unlocked the top “Level 2” VIP tier received an even more exciting reward. They enjoyed an intense tactical laser tag experience at the massive iCombat facility in Waukesha, Wisconsin. Afterward, they celebrated with a premium barbecue feast.
“The mivtza totally changed the atmosphere in yeshiva,” said one Shiur Alef bochur. “Every single seder counted, and getting to celebrate all that hard work with jet skiing and laser tag together with the whole class was the perfect way to end the year.”
The yeshiva extended a special yasher koach to the dedicated shluchim, Dovid Segal and Meir Shmukler, who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to coordinate the complex logistics of the trip, as well as to the entire hanhola for their unwavering support and dedication throughout the zman.
As the bochurim packed their bags and headed home for a short break before Yeshivas Kayitz, they took with them far more than luggage. They left Postville with a deep sense of accomplishment, significant Torah achievements, and memories of an unforgettable yeshiva experience that will serve as a springboard for the coming year.
