‘Disco Rabbi’ Dons Baba Sali’s Yarmulka in Ohel Encounter
In a moving encounter at the Ohel, Rabbi Yitzchak Dovid Grossman met the Baba Sali’s grandson, Rabbi Moshe Eliyahu Buso, who placed his grandfather’s original yarmulka on his head as the two shared stories and spoke warmly about the Rebbe.
At the Rebbe’s Ohel, Rabbi Moshe Eliyahu Buso of Yerushalayim, grandson of the Baba Sali, met Rabbi Yitzchak Dovid Grossman, chief rabbi of Migdal HaEmek and founder of Migdal Ohr, where they exchanged warm words and spoke with admiration about the Rebbe.
Rabbi Buso leads the Maor Yisrael Torah institutions in Yerushalayim and is the son of Rabbi David Buso, a son-in-law of the Baba Sali.
Rabbi Grossman, known throughout Eretz Yisroel as the “Disco Rabbi,” has spent more than five decades reaching disconnected youth through Migdal Ohr, which today serves more than 10,000 students. He is widely regarded as one of the most prominent and respected rabbanim in Eretz Yisroel.
Rabbi Buso arrived in New York and was greeted at JFK Airport by the shluchim and bochurim manning the Chabad Air stand, led by askan Rabbi Shmuly Butler. He was then escorted from the airport and driven to the Ohel.
Rabbi Grossman was in the United States for several major events and, as he has done on previous visits, spent Shabbos at the Ohel. He farbrenged with bochurim and guests, including a group of students from Yeshivas Shefa together with their rosh yeshiva, Rabbi Gutman. Following Shabbos, he was also seen dancing with the yeshiva students and their rosh yeshiva.
“Whenever my grandfather is in America, he spends Shabbos at the Ohel,” his grandson, Rabbi Dovi Henig, shliach to Chengdu, China, who accompanied him, told Anash.org. “When he spends Shabbos at the Rebbe’s Ohel, he says that this is his time for himself.”
As Rabbi Grossman was preparing to leave, Rabbi Buso arrived. The two greeted each other with obvious joy and spoke at length. Rabbi Buso took out the original yarmulka that his grandfather, the Baba Sali, used to wear and placed it on Rabbi Grossman’s head.
Visibly moved, Rabbi Grossman shared a story about the Baba Sali’s devotion to the honor of the Baal Shem Tov. When that honor was slighted, the Baba Sali went to great lengths to defend it, even leaving his home and relocating outside the city.
The two also spoke about the Rebbe, sharing their personal connections to him and their deep respect and admiration. Rabbi Buso described his grandfather’s strong hiskashrus and bittul to the Rebbe.
