Checking This Elul? Full List of Crown Heights Sofrim and Prices

For Crown Heights residents looking to have their mezuzos or tefillin checked this Elul, a newly compiled list provides the contact information and current prices of local stores and private sofrim in one place.

The Mateh Efraim writes that anshei maaseh who make a cheshbon hanefesh during Elul have their tefillin and mezuzos checked. The Rebbe quoted this custom numerous times and encouraged checking tefillin and mezuzos during Elul. In cases where additional brachos are needed, the Rebbe also wrote that mezuzos should be checked annually.

The regular halachic requirement for privately owned mezuzos is twice every seven years, as stated in the Gemara and brought in Shulchan Aruch, Yoreh Deah 291:1. The Chasam Sofer explains that after a mezuzah was properly checked initially, subsequent examinations are intended to determine whether the writing has deteriorated, such as through cracked or smudged letters. The Rebbe also pointed out that checking mezuzos includes making sure they are affixed correctly.
