Central Tomchei Temimim Marks 129th Founding Anniversary

Bochurim of the Central Tomchei Temimim Yeshiva at 770 gathered Thursday night for a special farbrengen marking Tes-Vov Elul, the 129th anniversary of the founding of Yeshivas Tomchei Temimim.

The farbrengen was led by Rosh Yeshiva Rabbi Zalman Labkowski, together with members of the yeshiva’s hanhala, with a large crowd of bochurim filling the upstairs zal of 770.

Tes-Vov Elul marks the day in 5657 (1897) when the Rebbe Rashab founded Yeshivas Tomchei Temimim in Lubavitch, establishing a yeshiva in which the study of Nigleh and Chassidus would both form an integral part of the daily seder.

As recorded in Hayom Yom, the yeshiva was founded on Tes-Vov Elul 5657, while the actual learning of Nigleh and Chassidus began three days later, on Chai Elul. On Simchas Torah 5659, the Rebbe Rashab announced that the yeshiva would be called “Tomchei Temimim,” and that its talmidim who learned and conducted themselves in its spirit would be known as “Temimim.”
