Bochurim in the Lubavitch Mesivta of Kingston PA had the opportunity to witness firsthand the process of preparing a get and appointing a shliach to deliver it.

Rabbi Yirmiyahu Benyowitz, an expert in Gittin from the Beis Din of Baltimore, traveled to Kingston, PA to write a get, which is the first ever to be written in Kingston proper. This is significant in that it also establishes the proper spelling for the name of the town and local river.

Forming a Beis Din in the Mesivta building in order to be mekayem the Shtar Shlichus, the bochurim of the Mesivta got to see firsthand what a get looks like, and what goes into appointing a shliach for a get. The bochurim also learned what to do if one or both eidim are not proficient in ksav ashuris, which is required for their signatures on the get itself.

Special thanks goes to Rabbi Dovid Kaplan of Congregation Ohav Zedek for coordinating that Mesivta could participate in part of the process.

Maseches Gittin is being learned this year in Lubavitch yeshivos around the world. In Kingston, bochurim are aiming to finish the entire masechta or other significant amounts, with some learning the masechta by heart.
