Chazal say, “Agra deta’aneisa – tzidkesa,” the reward for fasting is for the tzedaka given on that day.
The Rebbe quotes the practice to calculate the cost of the food that you would have eaten were it not a fast day and to give that amount to the poor. This heightens Hashem’s acceptance of our fast. (Hisvaaduyos 5749, Vol. 2, p. 460)
