98-Year-Old Man Beaten by Anti-Israel Campaign Worker

A 98-year-old man beloved by his Brooklyn neighbors was punched and beaten with a broomstick and a metal chair by a woman during an attack fueled by an argument over a political flyer.

A 98-year-old man beloved by his Brooklyn neighbors was punched and beaten with a broomstick and a metal chair by a woman during an attack fueled by an argument over a political flyer, police said Friday.

The senior citizen had just entered his building on Maple St in Crown Heights just before 4 p.m. Thursday when he got into an argument with a woman stuffing political flyers into residential mailboxes, police said.

Building residents said it was a re-election flyer for New York State Committee Member Anthony Beckford for the June 23 primary.

The building has a strict “no flyers, no posters” rule, according to a sign attached to the front door. As they yelled at each other, the woman punched the elderly man in the back of the head, then beat the senior with a broomstick and a metal chair, cops said. She then ran east on Maple St towards the center of Crown Heights, cops said.

The woman was last seen wearing a dark blue jacket, grey sweatpants, and a backpack. The senior suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene. “The man is my husband. He’s shaken up,” said the victim’s wife, who declined to give her name. “The police were here. The situation is being handled by them.”

“He’s shaken up,” the woman said. “He’s an elderly man. It’s just that he’s been assaulted.” Cops recovered doorbell camera footage of the woman stuffing fliers in mailboxes before the attack. Detectives released the footage on Friday, hoping someone would recognize her.

New York City police later announced that they had arrested a suspect accused of attacking a 98-year-old man with a broomstick and a metal chair during an altercation on Thursday in Brooklyn.  Tashara Abel, 27, was arrested Friday and charged with assault, burglary, and criminal possession of a weapon.

Beckford is a DSA Anti-Israel socialist who, along with the current female district leader representing our neighborhood. He signed a letter along with Assemblyman Brian Cunningham to Defund the NYPD. Beckford and the female district leader are being challenged by moderate common-sense State Committee Members, male district leader candidate Akel Williams, and female district leader candidate Nakisha Evans, both of whom are friendly with the Crown Heights Jewish community.

A CH activist said in a statement, “When residents head to the polls to vote for Ahron Gluck as the community tries to iyh make history in Crown Heights, bear in mind that there are also other important races on the ballot, including: Members of the State Committee candidates Akel KWilliams and Nakisha OEvans in this month’s Democratic primary election.”

In order to participate in the primary to support Mr. Gluck, Mr. Williams, and Ms. Evans, you must be registered and enrolled to vote as a Democrat:
