45 years later, Israel is beginning to confront the fact that Egypt continually violates the terms of the 1979 peace agreement and the U.S. has failed to hold them accountable. Despite recent positive developments in Israel and the US, the Rebbe’s warnings serve as a reminder that Israel must remain vigilant.

Israel has finally begun to confront a long-overlooked reality. Egypt, far from being a peaceful neighbor, has continually violated the terms of the 1979 peace agreement, and the U.S., despite being a signatory to enforce the deal, has failed to hold Egypt accountable.
This shift in Israel’s approach follows years of warnings from the Rebbe, who consistently advised that Egypt could not be trusted to uphold peace. The Rebbe cautioned that the Egyptian regime had no genuine interest in peace, an insight that is now painfully evident as new reports come to light.
For years, Egypt’s actions suggested that the peace agreement was a facade. Despite publicly agreeing to peace terms with Israel, Egypt’s military expansion in Sinai and covert support for Hamas have raised serious concerns.
The Egyptian military buildup, including advanced weaponry and increasing troop numbers, directly contradicted the 1979 treaty, which limited Egypt’s military presence in Sinai. Recent reports indicated that Egypt has been instrumental in enabling Hamas’s military capabilities, providing weapons, allowing the construction of tunnels—leading to the devastating October 7 attacks on Israel.
“The United States has long turned a blind eye to Iranian smuggling through Egypt to arm, equip, and train Hamas”, says Richard Goldberg, a senior adviser at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies. “Like everything post-October 7, we need a reset on how we view the Egyptian-Gaza border and how we will work with the Egyptians to shut down illicit smuggling routes.”
But what is even more troubling is Egypt’s active role in causing this destruction. New reports suggest that the head of Egyptian intelligence deliberately misled Israeli intelligence, providing false information just hours before the attacks, further jeopardizing Israel’s security.
The Rebbe’s prophetic warnings about Egypt’s lack of sincerity in peace negotiations are now resonating more strongly than ever. For years, Israel, under external pressure, ignored these facts. However, Israel has now thankfully begun to openly address the danger posed by Egypt’s actions, acknowledging the severe threat to its southern border.
Dani Danon, Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations, made a rare and significant public statement last Thursday in remarks to the press, expressing concern over Egypt’s growing military capabilities. Danon questioned Egypt’s ongoing investment in advanced military equipment, despite the absence of any direct threats along its borders, and urged Israel to closely monitor Egypt’s actions, considering them a potential risk.
Danon’s comments, also included criticism of U.S. support for Egypt’s military buildup, calling for a reevaluation of the strategic assistance given to Cairo. His remarks are viewed as the first time a senior Israeli official has openly challenged Egypt’s military expansion in Sinai, marking a shift in Israel’s stance on its southern neighbor.
Meanwhile, the U.S. Congress is now formally looking into Egypt’s violations of the 1979 peace agreement with Israel. A sensitive discussion on this issue is set to take place in a closed session among Republican members of Congress, who will address the mounting evidence of Egypt’s military activity in Sinai where they will reexamine U.S. financial and military aid to Egypt.
This is the first time that American lawmakers are raising the issue of Egypt’s violations as a matter of national security, especially in light of the growing threat these actions pose to Israel. Lawmakers are seeking to determine whether the U.S. should continue its support for a regime that is flouting its commitments under the Camp David Accords.
However, while the U.S. is starting to wake up, Israel must remain vigilant. The Rebbe’s words hold true today: Israel must make all its security decisions independently, without relying on external powers, including the U.S., whose interests do not always align with Israel’s needs.
It is time for Israel to reclaim its strength, defend its borders, and fight against violations without hesitation. Only through strength and resolve will Israel ensure its security moving forward. The Rebbe’s warnings about Egypt’s true intentions serve as a crucial reminder that Israel must trust only itself and its own capabilities, standing firm against any pressure or manipulation.
