The Body Should Behave According to Torah

In preparation for Gimmel Tammuz, we present you each day with a unique short quote from the Rebbe. Prepared by Rabbi Pesach Schmerling, shliach in Far Rockaway, NY.

A main theme in Judaism is unity, not only unity of G-d and of Torah, but also unity within one’s own inner personality. In contrast to the view that one should always give in to the body’s desires and ignore the soul, and also in contrast to the view that one should afflict the body to ensure the perfection of the soul, the Torah teaches that while the soul must be the leading factor in life, its job isn’t to afflict the body, rather to see to it that the body should behave, in health, according to the dictates of the Torah, called the Torah of life.
