There aren’t many teachers who can pride themselves on having hit the 50-year mark. There aren’t many teachers who can pride themselves on having their birthday celebrated annually with a full-on birthday bash. But then again, there aren’t many teachers like Rabbi Avrohom Gerlitzky.

This year marks 50 years of R’ Avrohom’s teaching career, one characterized by an unparalleled devotion and love of learning and of his students. It’s not for naught that he has earned himself the title ‘World’s Most Beloved Maggid Shiur’. The care that he shows to all his talmidim – with the total number now reaching over 1,000 – is a genuine one, and is dearly reciprocated.

R’ Avrohom’s care extends beyond the yeshiva walls as well. Every Shabbos, he hosts bochurim by his house for the meals – and the meals aren’t limited to his current talmidim alone!

For years afterwards, bochurim will still frequent his house and receive the same fatherly affection. When former talmidim, now living out-of-town, come to Crown Heights, many make a point of coming to visit their beloved Maggid Shiur.

“It’s amusing to be sitting in zal learning, when in comes a man who’s a grandfather now, and goes over to your teacher to schmooze, him being once upon a time a student himself,” remarks Sholom Ber, a student this year. “There are also many fathers who come now to visit their sons in yeshiva, and will then go to say hello to their son’s – and their own – teacher!”

We wish R’ Avrohom many more happy and healthy years of teaching, until the coming of Moshiach now!
