Around 800 years ago, the Tzadik Reb Amnon of Mainz—famously known for composing the holy Tefillah of Unesaneh Tokef, recited on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur—gave his son Eliezer a heartfelt and solemn instruction: never to cross the River Danube.

But young Eliezer was filled with a burning desire to learn Torah. He longed to study at the great yeshiva of Rabbi Yehudah HaChassid, located in the city of Regensburg—just beyond the Danube. Despite his father’s plea, Eliezer’s thirst for Torah led him to cross the river.
