Family and friends of Rabbi Mendel Okunov a”h gathered Wednesday night at FREE Shul in Crown Heights for a memorial event and siyum Mishnayos marking 30 days since his passing.
Family members spoke about R’ Mendel’s younger years growing up in the Soviet Union, where he kept mitzvos with great mesiras nefesh while hiding from the KGB.
Friends recalled Reb Mendel’s devotion to the Rebbe and his shlichus in the F.R.E.E. organization. Through his leadership of Yeshivas Ohel Dovid and Camp Gan Yisroel under the F.R.E.E organization, he showed thousands of students the warmth and light of Yiddishkeit.
