President Donald Trump is scheduled to visit Suffern on Friday, the first day of Shavuos, for an official White House event with Congressman Mike Lawler at Rockland Community College, in a rare presidential visit to heavily Jewish Rockland County.

The event is scheduled for 3:00 PM at the Eugene Levy Fieldhouse, with local officials, residents, supporters, and community members expected to attend. The White House said the president will speak about his economic agenda, including tax relief and the expansion of the SALT deduction cap, a major issue for New York families.

Rabbi Shmuel Gancz, shliach in Suffern, was invited to deliver the invocation at the event and said he would have accepted had the event not been scheduled for Shavuos. “If it wasn’t Shavuos, I would do it in an instant,” he said. “But because it’s Shavuos, I’m not able to go on Yom Tov.”

Rabbi Gancz said he and local organizers were also working to arrange Aseres Hadibros for Yidden in the area over Shavuos. He added that Congressman Mike Lawler’s office has consistently been helpful to the frum community, and praised aide Rafi Silverberg for assisting with communal needs whenever called upon.

Trump’s visit is scheduled for the first day of Shavuos, when Yidden gather in shul to hear the Aseres Hadibros. With the event taking place in heavily Jewish Rockland County, most frum residents will be unable to attend because of Yom Tov.

The visit is expected to be the first by a sitting president to Rockland County in decades, with reports that the last such visit was by President Gerald Ford in 1976. The event has drawn attention across the Hudson Valley, where officials have been preparing for road closures, traffic delays, and heightened security.

Several Rockland school districts announced early dismissals ahead of the visit, and Rockland Community College offices and campus operations are set to close for the day.

Lawler, whose district includes Rockland and Putnam counties along with parts of Westchester and Dutchess, is considered one of the most closely watched Republicans in the country. His district is expected to be a major congressional battleground, and Trump’s appearance is being viewed as a strong show of support.

We appreciate your feedback. If you have any additional information to contribute to this article, it will be added below.

  1. Fake news.

Rabbi gancz declined to do the invocation because of the event happening on shevuos, no connection to the Torah reading.

Rabbi gancz also offered to help arrange Torah readings for the Yidden who would be attending and not hearing the answers hadibros, which was arranged at a nearby location.
