New Song Shares Avraham’s Call to the World
Rabbi Mendel Kohn releases “Vayakri,” a soulful new song inspired by the Rebbe’s first maamar, giving voice to Avraham Avinu’s mission of inspiring others to call out in Hashem’s name.
A new song titled “Vayakri” was released by Rabbi Mendel Kohn, drawing its message from the Rebbe’s first maamar, Basi L’gani 5711, and the teaching of Chazal on Avraham Avinu’s mission to spread emunah in Hashem.
The song is based on the possuk, “Vayikra sham b’shem Hashem Keil Olam,” where Chazal teach, “Al tikri Vayikra, ela Vayakri,” do not read that Avraham called out in Hashem’s name, but that he caused others to call out in Hashem’s name.
Describing the message behind the song, Kohn said it draws on the Rebbe’s teaching in the first maamar. “Avraham didn’t just call to G-d alone,” he said. “He taught others to call, and he revealed that G-d and the world are one.”
He said the song brings out the Rebbe’s hora’ah that a Yid’s avodah is not complete with his own Yiddishkeit alone. “The Rebbe taught us that for our Judaism to be complete, we must teach others in a way that causes each of them to become a teacher themselves,” Kohn said.
That message, he explained, continues from one person to the next, as each Yid is inspired not only to live with emunah, but to pass it on and teach others that Hashem and the world are one.
“Vayakri” follows Kohn’s earlier musical releases, including “Echad,” filmed in Crown Heights, and “Eretz Yisroel Belongs to Us,” a song based on the first Rashi in the Torah and the Rebbe’s teaching on the Jewish people’s eternal right to Eretz Yisroel.
