Bermuda shliach Rabbi Chaim Birnhack met with King Charles III of England during his four-day royal tour of the island, following his visit to the United States, in the wake of the horrific antisemitic terror attack on the streets of Golders Green.

The visit, his first as monarch, focused on strengthening ties with the UK’s overseas territory, with meetings with local leaders, official ceremonies, and attention to environmental and public service initiatives.

During their conversation, Rabbi Birnhack shared how deeply grateful many in the Jewish community, and beyond, are for the King’s clear and compassionate stand against antisemitism and his longstanding friendship toward the Jewish people.

The King, in turn, shared with the shliach about his grandmother, Princess Alice of Battenberg, who, while living in Nazi-occupied Athens during the Holocaust, risked her own life to hide and save Jews from the Nazis, while also quietly helping feed and care for those in need, without ever making a big deal about it.

She was later recognized by Yad Vashem as Righteous Among the Nations, and she even asked to be buried in Yerushalayim, and today she rests on Har Hazeisim.

The exchange was warm and cordial, with the King expressing deep interest in the Jewish community and related issues. The impact of the conversation was felt widely across the Jewish community in Bermuda and beyond.

“In a world where hate can be loud, acts of courage, kindness, and moral clarity echo even louder,” Rabbi Birnhack said. “May we continue to build bridges of respect, faith, and friendship, and may we always stand together for light, dignity, and goodness.”
