German Chancellor Boards Mitzvah Tank in Berlin
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Bundestag President Julia Klöckner, and a top government delegation visited Berlin’s Jewish community this week, hosted by Head Shliach Rabbi Yehuda Teichtal. The highlight came when Chancellor Merz stepped aboard the Chabad Mitzvah Tank operated by Rabbi Mendel Brandwine.
The visit by the top echelon of the German government took place on Monday as part of a series of events marking 30 years since the revitalization of the Jewish community in Berlin.
Chancellor Friedrich Merz, leader of the CDU party, was joined by Bundestag President Julia Klöckner and a delegation of senior ministers and governors. They were received by the Rabbi of Berlin and Head Shliach, Rabbi Yehuda Teichtal.
While the visit was prompted by a recent rise in antisemitic incidents, the atmosphere was one of celebration for the community’s three-decade milestone. The highlight of the tour occurred when the Chancellor was invited to visit the Chabad Mitzvah Tank that has become a fixture on the streets of the German capital.
The Chancellor was welcomed to the tank by Rabbi Mendel Brandwine, who operates the mobile center. Merz took the time to step inside the vehicle, which serves as a mobile hub for Yiddishkeit, outreach, and education. The Chancellor expressed deep interest in the tank’s mission of bringing Jewish awareness to every corner of the city, regardless of the challenges.
“Seeing the Chancellor of Germany board a Mitzvah Tank is a historic moment for this city,” community members noted. “It sends a message that Jewish life is not only protected here but is a proud and visible part of Berlin’s daily landscape.”
Accompanied by heavy security and dozens of media outlets, the delegation also toured the community’s various mosdos, which provide education and services for all ages. During a speech at the main shul, the Chancellor reiterated his unwavering support for the community and condemned all acts of antisemitism.
“We view this visit as a clear message of support from the government,” Rabbi Teichtal stated. “Throughout the years, the Chancellor has championed the flourishing of Jewish life. This morning’s visit, especially as we celebrate 30 years of our community, illustrates that commitment more than anything.”
The visit concluded with the Chancellor meeting students from the Chabad educational institutions, witnessing firsthand the remarkable growth of a community that has transformed from a small gathering 30 years ago into a vibrant cornerstone of European Jewish life today.
