East Flatbush Night Kolel is Booming with Kol Torah

In a vibrant and flourishing Lubavitch community, merely minutes from central Crown Heights, the traditional sing-song of Torah can be heard at nights.

After a full day of work and tending to their families, young men come to join the Kolel Erev of East Flatbush.

The launching of this bold initiative was done by a few local residents who are passionate about learning Torah. A full curriculum is offered to the attendees, complete with shiurim from Rabonim and various Magidei shiurim.

Often it happens that a guest or a passerby stops by the Kolel to chap a Ma’ariv or a drink and is blown away by the scene. Yungelite, Bal’batim, young and old are all immersed in learning, Chavrusas and small learning groups mastering a Blat Gemoro or a Ma’amer. “The Kol Torah is unbelievable!” said one of the people who walked in. “I regularly would run in-and-out, but I was just drawn to sit down and open a sefer!”

Another senior resident of East Flatbush shared his memories: “It has been a long time since the voice of Torah was heard in the neighborhood. I remember the vibrant community we had and felt devastation when I saw the empty synagogues and the struggle for a Minyan. It is a dream come true to see and hear Torah learning at such a late hour every night of the week.”

While the great merit of Limud HaTorah itself draws in people to study, simultaneously, much effort is made to attend to the Gashmiyus as well. Light refreshments are served, as well as a monthly stipend is given out to the Kolel members, modest yet greatly appreciated by the hard-working families.

This Kolel also presents a special opportunity for people to get the Zchus of Torah study with a Yissachar-Zevulun partnership. As a part-time Kolel, the budget is relatively smaller than a full-time one, giving the opportunity to make dedications for daily, weekly, or monthly learning at an affordable price.
