Chabad Family Develops Free App to Simplify Maaser Tracking

A Chabad family in Yerushalayim has developed a free app that helps families keep track of their maaser and tzedakah contributions, making it easy to know exactly how much they have given and how much remains.

Like many families, the family behind Nehora, a small software studio run by a Chabad family in Yerushalayim, always made sure to give tzedakah. But keeping track of how much had been given was another story.

“I always gave tzedakah,” R’ Beany Ehrenberg recalls. “A hundred shekel here, two hundred there, and a few monthly standing orders. I always assumed we were good.”

But every so often, his wife would ask a simple question: Could they give to another cause? Did they still have maaser left to give? Were they actually giving the full amount, or just estimating?

“I never knew exactly where we stood. It was driving us nuts.”

When he began experimenting with AI-powered software development, he decided to tackle the problem himself. He built a simple app called My Maasrot, designed to give him and his wife a clear picture of their maaser contributions.

“It solved the problem completely,” he says. “Now I know exactly where we stand.”

What began as a personal solution soon grew into something bigger. Friends began using the app, and their enthusiastic feedback prompted the family to add more features, including pledge tracking, recurring donations, and a shared household account.

The app has now been expanded to include a full English version with support for US dollars, making it accessible to families around the world.

The concept is simple: Users enter their income and tzedakah contributions, and the app automatically calculates how much they have given toward their maaser goal and how much remains.

Users can set their target at 10 percent or higher, with the app maintaining a running total over time. It also tracks annual tzedakah pledges according to the Jewish calendar, allowing donations to count toward both maaser and a pledge.

For those who give through monthly standing orders, recurring donations can be confirmed with a single tap rather than entered manually each time.

Another feature allows users to track money set aside in a dedicated maaser fund, ensuring that funds are counted when allocated and not counted a second time when distributed.

Husbands and wives can share a single household ledger, allowing both to see their contributions and remaining balance. The app is available in English and Hebrew, supports dollars and shekels, and can be accessed using email, Google, or Apple sign-in.

The developers emphasize that the app is not intended to replace halachic guidance. Questions about what income is subject to maaser and which contributions qualify should still be directed to a rov. The app simply provides a practical way to keep accurate records.

Privacy was also a priority in its development. Financial information is visible only to members of the household, and the app does not require linking bank accounts.

My Maasrot is completely free and available for iPhone, Android, and web browsers.
