At this year’s National Jewish Retreat, JLI hosted a pre-release launch for a new book by Rabbis Mendel Kalmenson and Zalman Abraham. People of the Word: Fifty Words That Shaped Jewish Thinking is a hard-cover, 444-page volume published by Chabad.org and Ezra Press (an imprint of Kehot Publication Society) that unlocks the mysterious world of Jewish etymology and philosophy. This accessible volume provides insight into fifty key Hebrew words that have been mistranslated and misunderstood for centuries. Each chapter takes the reader on an etymological journey into the big ideas that continue to shape Jewish thoughts, values, and culture to this day.
Participants at the launch event were privy to a behind-the-scenes look at the book’s journey from conception to completion, insights into the rationale for the book’s creation, and author readings of select inspirational passages from the new volume.
The book has received rave reviews from an eclectic group of rabbis and scholars from various specialties, including members of the prestigious Academy of the Hebrew Language and professors of language, psychology, Jewish studies, and history.
It has been lauded as “a work that should sit on every Jewish bookshelf” and “a must-read book for any reader interested in promoting their understanding of life according to Jewish thought.”
