A grand party was held on Wednesday, 14 Cheshvan, celebrating the 74th birthday of Rabbi Avrohom Gerlitzky and the conclusion of his 50th year of serving as a Maggid shiur at Oholei Torah Zal.

Rabbi Gerlitzky began teaching in Oholei Torah, the flagship Chabad Yeshiva in the United States, in 5732. This year, 5782, marks the conclusion of the 50th year that he is teaching, l’orech yomim v’shanim tovos.

For almost four decades, the yeshiva bochurim have celebrated Rabbi Gerlitzky’s birthday with a full on celebration, including farbrengen, birthday cake and presents.

This year was no different. A massive banner stretched over Kingston Ave and flyers were distributed on cars throughout the neighborhood, wishing the veteran teacher a happy birthday. The celebration itself took place in Crown Heights’ Agudah Shul, in which the bochurim recited a special poem that they wrote about Rabbi Gerlitzky, and presented him with a gift – new custom-made bookcases for his home.

Among the guests in attendance were Rabbi Yisroel Shemtov, Rabbi Shimon Mockin and Rabbi Menachem Gerlitzky.

The celebration took place amid much singing, dancing and music, with many former students stopping by to give and receive brachos from their beloved teacher.

  1. Wishing my teacher R Avrham Shlita a Shnas Hatzlacha in all his endeavors especially in his holy work of the kovetz haaoros which has been threatened the past few days, may hashem give him the strength to stand strong against these nisyanos!
