As Cuba’s Crisis Deepens, Four Tons of Aid Reach Jewish Families

As shortages of food and fuel continue to worsen across Cuba, Chabad Friends of Cuban Jewry (CFCJ) has completed a major humanitarian aid distribution, delivering close to four tons of essential supplies to a large number of Jewish families across the island.

The comprehensive distribution comes at a critical juncture for Cuba, which is enduring its most severe socioeconomic crisis in decades. Persistent nationwide blackouts, soaring inflation and the breakdown of basic supply chains have left residents struggling to secure fundamental necessities.

With Cuba heavily dependent on imports for its food supply, foreign-currency constraints and fuel shortages have further disrupted agriculture, transportation and distribution, leaving many families without reliable access to basic goods.

CFCJ, which provides humanitarian assistance throughout the year alongside its educational activities, stepped up its efforts to provide families with food, medical supplies, hygiene products and other basic necessities.

With the support of Merkos Suite 302, under the direction of Rabbi Mendy Kotlarsky, CFCJ was able to undertake the large-scale distribution and assemble a broad range of supplies for families throughout Cuba.

The shipment included shelf-stable staples such as cooking oil, spaghetti, rice, flour, milk, canned beans, crackers, and other basic foods. Families also received essential hygiene and household supplies, including candles, Advil, Band-Aids, soap, shampoo, toothpaste, and toothbrushes.

The supplies, totaling close to four tons, were gathered and prepared for shipment before being transported to a freight company. Getting the shipment to Cuba presented its own set of challenges amid the current limitations and difficult conditions on the island.

Once the supplies arrived, a group of bochurim traveled to Cuba to help organize and oversee the distribution. The shipment was brought to the CFCJ location, where it was divided for distribution to families in Havana, while additional groups brought aid to Jewish communities in cities and towns across the island.

“The effort was tremendous, and the cost was enormous, particularly due to the additional challenges in the present situation on the island, including the widespread shortage of gasoline, which itself created a major hurdle to getting the supplies delivered,” said Rabbi Shimon Aisenbach, director of CFCJ.

The distribution also required extensive travel, with those delivering the aid covering more than 680 miles to reach communities outside Havana.

“With the help and blessing of Hashem, the relief we were able to bring to communities across the island outweighed all the challenges,” Rabbi Aisenbach said.
