100 Years: The Rebbe’s Letter to the Rogatchover Explained

100 years ago, on 15 Teves 5685, the Rebbe, then only 22 years old, corresponds with the Rogatchover Gaon on a complex question related to a sugya in the laws of Treifos. Marking 100 years, the Tzfunot Institute is happy to present a first draft of a comprehensive overview of the letter.

100 years ago, on the 15th of Teves 5685, the Rebbe, then only 22 years old, corresponds with the Rogatchover on a complex question related to a sugya in the laws of Treifos.

In a three-page letter, which includes more than 40 references to the Talmud and its commentaries, and written in the style of the Rogatchover’s himself, the Rebbe argues with the Rogatchover’s opinion on the matter, disproves the Rogatchover’s main proof and brings four proofs supporting his own opinion.

This letter, published in the beginning of Vol. 21 of Igros Kodesh, is the first dated letter that we have of the Rebbe. In fact, this is apparently the earliest Torah that we have from the Rebbe.

In honor of the 100 years of the letter (15 Teves 5685-5785), the Tzfunot Institute is happy to present a first draft of a comprehensive overview of the letter.
