Two Jews walk into a bar, three walk out…

Life is full of surprises—or so it seems.

On Wednesday, our guests from last Shabbos Rabbi Yisroel (the shliach at Hadassah Hospital) and his friend Yossi, drove a couple of hours outside Houston for a horseback riding excursion when, at the last minute, the plans fell through. Surprise #1.

When this happened, Yossi—whose father had received a transplant and wonderful care at MD Anderson Cancer Center—suggested a change of plans. “Let’s cancel the local hotel,” he said. “I want to go back to MD Anderson to thank the people who helped my father.”

They visited the hospital and the next morning, Thursday, they davened Shacharis at Aishel House, the Chabad House serving the Texas Medical Center, renowned for its extraordinary care for hospital patients and their families.

After davening, they sat down to enjoy the daily breakfast at Aishel, and found themselves sitting with the legendary Rabbi Shimon Lazarov, whom they both admire greatly. Surprise #2. Although he is usually in a different part of Houston at that hour, he happened to be there that morning and they enjoyed a fun and inspiring, lengthy conversation.

Because of their unexpected encounter, they arrived late for their scheduled dolphin tour in Galveston. The next available tour wasn’t until 1:30 p.m. Surprise #3.

When they returned at 1:30, they were told that the tour had been canceled. Although the skies were clear, lightning had been spotted farther offshore, making it unsafe to leave the harbor. They were asked to return at 2:45 p.m. Surprise #4.

With time to spare—and feeling thirsty—they crossed the street to a local bar for a Coke and a beer. There they struck up a conversation with the young bartender. He explained that he was a Catholic of Polish descent. He mentioned that his Polish grandfather had been arrested by the Nazis. Then, almost in passing, he added that his maternal grandmother was Jewish. Surprise #5.

Rabbis Yisroel and Yossi shared with their new friend that he is Jewish according to Jewish tradition, because his mother’s mother was Jewish!

He was astonished. “But I was raised Catholic,” he replied. “That may be,” they explained, “but your Jewish identity comes through your mother. If your maternal grandmother was Jewish, then you are Jewish.”

“Would you be willing to meet us when your shift ends (4:30)? There’s something important we’d like to share with you.” Returning to the bar promptly at 4:30, they met the young bartender outside, now joined by Rabbi Yitzchok Schmukler, shliach of the Bay Area who ‘happened’ to be driving nearby. They discussed what it means to be a Jew and the unique bond every Jew has with Hashem. They explained the mitzvah of Tefillin and asked if he would like to put them on.

Right there, on the streets of Galveston, at 4:55 p.m., this newly discovered Jewish young man wrapped tefillin for the very first time—his personal Bar mitzvah!

Looking back, a string of frustrating interruptions was actually a journey carefully orchestrated by Hashem. A canceled horseback ride, an unexpected encounter in Houston, a missed dolphin tour, another cancellation, and an unplanned stop for a drink—all of it led to one Jewish Neshama discovering who he truly is.

Perhaps life’s “surprises” are not surprises at all. Sometimes they are Hashem redirecting our steps, opening doors we never expected, and placing us exactly where we are needed. Are we willing to recognize these moments—and seize the opportunities they bring?
