Rabbi Dr. Norman Lamm, president emeritus of Yeshiva University, passed away Sunday, Ches Sivan, from COVID-19 complications.
He was 92 years old.
His wife Mindy Lamm passed just away a few weeks ago also after contracting COVID-19.
Rabbi Lamm held a Ph.D. in Jewish philosophy and was the third President of Yeshiva University, the first to be born in the United States. He was a Talmid of Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik who ordained him at the Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary, Yeshiva University’s rabbinical school in 1951.
In 1956, while serving as a pulpit rabbi in Springfield, Mass, Rabbi Lamm merited to have yechidus with the Rebbe where they discussed Jewish education in America.
Although not a Chassid himself, Rabbi Lamm has been very kindly disposed to Chasidus, showing much affection and respect toward Lubavitch.
“I have a great, enormous respect for Lubavitch, not only the late Rebbe, but for the Chasidim too” he told Chabad historian Rabbi Chaim Dalfin. “Their work in the Chabad houses, in every area has been enormous. I appreciate their openness.”
