R’ Avrohom Shmuel Spalter, a devoted and humble Chossid who lived in Crown Heights and in recent years in North Miami Beach, Florida, and the patriarch of a large Lubavitch family, passed away on Tuesday, 24 Nissan.

He was 93 years old.

R’ Shmuel was born in Lancut, Poland, to a family of Bluzhov Chassidim. During the Second World War, his mother was murdered by the Nazis, and he escaped with his father to Russia. In Russia, his father passed away, and he was placed in a Soviet orphanage.

After the war, he met up with his great-uncle, R’ Mordechai Gershon Spalter, the dayan of Sonik, who adopted him like a son. Being that the only Chassidishe yeshiva in France was the Lubavitch Yeshiva in Brunoy, he was sent to learn there with his cousin. For Shavuos 5710 (1950), he arrived in New York, where he immediately joined the yeshiva in 770. He merited to be by the farbrengen of kabolas hanesius on Yud Shvat 5711.

In 5716 (1956), he married Mirel Lipszyc, and the Rebbe was mesader kidushin at their wedding. After the chassuna, he settled in Crown Heights and worked as a diamond cutter. He would rise early each day and was a dedicated participant in the early morning Gemara shiur by R’ Zalman Gurary. When R’ Zalman was away, he would deliver the shiur.

In his later years, he moved to North Miami Beach, Florida, where he learned half a day and worked in his son’s grocery store until recently. He spent his free time learning b’hasmada and was an exceptional Yerei Shomayim. He was well known for his humble and unassuming nature and would always try to help others.

He is survived by his wife, Mirel, and their children: Rabbi Moshe Spalter (Toronto), Mrs. Libby Wolf (Chicago, IL), Mrs. Mindy Chazan (Manchester, UK), Mrs. Dassi New (Atlanta, GA), Rabbi Hershel Spalter (Costa Rica), R’ Yitzi Spalter (North Miami Beach, FL), Rabbi Yisroel Spalter (Weston, FL), Mrs. Chani Nemes (New Orleans, LA), Rabbi Mendy Spalter (Los Angeles, CA), and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
