New York City Mayor Bill DeBlasio says Friday that parents should prepare for the possibility of school closures as early as Monday due to an increase in COVID-19 cases.

The mayor has previously said that he would close the city’s school system if the citywide COVID-19 infection rate went above 3 percent as a rolling seven-day average.

The average positivity rate in the city rose Friday to 2.8% from 2.6% the day before. The mayor has previously said that he would close the city’s school system if the citywide COVID-19 infection rate went above 3 percent as a rolling seven-day average.

A growing number of public health experts are saying that elementary schools should be allowed to open safely, and parents are raising concerns about the inadequacies of remote learning.

It remains unclear how this new rule will effect Yeshiva’s private schools that are not under the city’s administration. in July, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said schools will only shut down if the infection rate rises over 9 percent.

Cuomo announced earlier this week that bars and restaurants with liquor licenses will be required to close at 10 p.m. and all indoor gatherings at private residences will be capped at ten people.
