Indian Police have increased security around the Mumbai Chabad House after discovering pictures of the center in the possession of arrested terror suspects from the Maharashtra Anti Terrorism Squad (ATS).

Last week, two Islamic terror suspects were detained in India for plotting to carry out a series of bombings. The suspects had carried out surveillance of the Chabad House in Mumbai, the scene of a deadly attack 15 years ago.

On November 26, 2008, two Islamist terrorists seized the Chabad House in Mumbai, holding those present hostage. During the incident, six hostages were murdered, including shluchim Rabbi Gavriel and Rivka Holtzberg. Their two-year-old son Moshe survived the attack after being rescued by his Indian nanny.

The terrorists were found to be in possession of explosives, drone equipment, laptops, and incriminating books written in Arabic. Among the documents found on a phone were pictures of the Chabad House in Mumbai and its GPS coordinate.

Rabbi Shlomi Peles, CEO of Chabad World Assistance said that Chabad has been implementing various security measures, including physical protection, camera installations, and seminars for the heads of Chabad houses.

“I can say, to all those Jews who go on vacations, that in the last few years, Chabad houses have increased security and security measures. We have teams that go out all the time and advise. After the attack in 2008, the Mumbai Chabad House was reinforced and today it is a safe facility, so I have no doubt that they would not have succeeded in damaging it even if they had dreamed of it.”

  1. If the city name is of a false deity whose name connotes a deity in the language originated, and is not used as a name of people or items, then [from the letter of the law] it may not be used to call the name of the city. [An example of such a city is perhaps Mumbai, which is the name of a pagan goddess which connotes the term “Mother of creation.” One should call it Bombay or another name of the like.]
