Live: First Candle Lighting at the Kosel

Watch live at 9:00 AM EST: The first candle of Chanuka will be lit at the Kosel Plaza, the site closest to the where the miracle of Chanuka took place. 138 smaller menorahs will be lit for the Hamas captives.

As in previous years, Chanukah candles will be lit every night of Chanukah at the Kosel Plaza, the site closest to the where the miracle of the oil took place.

The lighting of the first Chanukah candle in the Western Wall plaza will take place under the banner of “lighting the light for the abductees”, when 138 menorahs, including the number of abductees held captive by Hamas, will be lit by representatives of the families of the abductees in the Western Wall plaza at the same time as the central menorah is lit.

The candles will be lit in a magnificent menorah made of bronze which is over 2 meters high and about 2 meters wide, weighs one ton, and took about seven months to create.

The Chanukah candles will be lit with olive oil, in special holders that are wind and rain-proof so the menorah can stay lit throughout the night.
