Government Officials Celebrate Chanukah in Smolensk, Russia

The mayor, deputy mayor and representatives of the local and district government participated in lighting the first candle of Chanukah in the Jewish community center of Smolensk, Russia.

The mayor, deputy mayor and representatives of the local and district government all participated in the ceremony of lighting the first candle of Chanukah which took place in the Jewish community center of Smolensk, led by the local shliach and chief Rabbi of the city, Rabbi Levi Yitzchok Mondshine.

Rabbi Mondshine opened by reciting a chapter of Tehilim and lit the first candle of Chanukah.

The large crowd enjoyed the lively klezmer band from Moscow, and of course the festive donuts. Everyone received menorahs and candles to light at home.

During the days of Chanukah, extensive activities took place both at the homes of the Jewish families in the city, and at the Jewish Community Center.
